Big George

First up is George Foreman, creator of the George Foreman grill. Actually he first became famous for being a heavyweight professional boxer. The grill came later. Foreman was born January 10th, 1949 in Marshall. He went on to be a two-time world heavyweight champion as well as an Olympic gold medalist. He retired from boxing when he was 46 and, as of today, is the oldest world heavyweight champion.

Pastoral Author

Second, we have Max Lucado who was born January 11th, 1955 in San Angelo. Lucado is a well-known pastor and author of Christian books. He has appeared on several bestseller lists and has written almost 100 books to date. His books, devotionals, and ministry encourage people to take one step closer to Jesus Christ. He is a great resource for anyone needing comfort or encouragement.

Remember my name – Fame!

Third is Houston native, Debbie Allen. She was born January 16th, 1950 in Houston Texas and is an amazing dancer, choreographer, and actress. Allen was admitted to the Houston Ballet Academy at only 13. She later performed on Broadway, was in the movie and television show, Fame, and was the first Black woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Piece of My Heart

Our fourth January birthday is legendary singer, Janis Joplin. Joplin was born January 19th, 1943 in Port Arthur. She is quite famous for her gravelly voice and hippie style. Unfortunately, she is also well-known for her excessive drinking and drug use which ultimately took her life at only 27 years old.

Miracle On The Hudson

Next we have an incredible pilot. Chesley Sullenberger, known as Sully, was born January 23rd, 1951 in Denison. He is a retired Air Force fighter pilot and retired commercial pilot. But he is best known for being the pilot aboard US Airways Flight 1549 on 1/15/2009. That is the one where both of the engines were disabled because of hitting a flock of birds. Sully glided the plane down and successfully performed an emergency landing in the Hudson River, saving all 155 people on board.

Brave Bessie

Our fifth birthday hero is Bessie Coleman, born January 26, 1892. She desired to be a pilot, but opportunities were non-existent for a mixed-race female in 1892. Coleman’s cultural background was African American and Cherokee. American flight schools did not accept women or black people in those days. So she got a sponsorship and studied in Paris instead. She is the first black woman and first Native American to earn a pilot’s license. But in order to make a living as a pilot in the US, she had to fly in airshows and perform dangerous stunts. And she did it brilliantly. She made crowds go crazy when she performed her stunning maneuvers such as figure eights and loops.

The Ryan Express

Our final January all-star is none other than Nolan Ryan, born January 31st, 1947 in Refugio. Without a doubt, Ryan is one of the best Major League Baseball pitchers of all time. He consistently threw pitches that were over 100 miles per hour throughout his MLB career. No one comes close to his career record of strikeouts at 5,714. But then, he also holds the record on walks by a big margin as well. Regardless, he is an amazing athlete and we are proud to say he is a Texan.

Conclusion

I bet these famous Texans are looking forward to birthday parties, presents, and time with friends and family. Remember to celebrate your favorite people that were born in January, too. And remember, you can’t go wrong with a gift from Texas Coffee Club!
