Special Treat for Cold Nights

Many of you, like us, are still experiencing freezing temperatures. A winter chill is still in the air throughout the day, and nighttime is down-right cold. We have to bundle up to go outside, and when the workday is finally over, we crave something warm. We need a special little something in the evening that is perfect for sipping in front of the fireplace while our feet thaw out, and a Hot Buttered Rum Coffee fits the bill perfectly. Oh. My. Gosh. It is sooo good!

Ingredients Needed for Hot Buttered Rum Coffee

You’ve probably heard of a Hot Buttered Rum Coffee cocktail, and this recipe starts out just like the cocktail by making a paste of butter and spices. Combine cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice with brown sugar and butter for a sensory delight. Your nose immediately tells you that this is something special and your tastebuds get anxious. Add rum, strong coffee and frothy milk to that spicy butterball of goodness and you have the perfect cold weather treat.

The Buttery Spice Combo

Making the spice component is super simple. You can use softened butter and mix it together with a spoon. I did something even simpler by putting the butter in a saucepan and adding everything to the pan. With the butter fully melted it all mixed together very easily in just a couple of minutes, and it was super simple to spoon out the amount of mix I needed for my drink. I’m sure the microwave would work well also.

You’ll notice I did not use the entire mix for my drink. There will be a nice amount left over which you can use for more cocktails or other uses where butter and cold weather spices are ideal. For example, waffles, pancakes, biscuits and croissants just to name a few. It’s butter-based so store it as you normally store your butter – in the fridge. Just remember, a little goes a long way since it’s pretty heavy on the spices.

Let’s Talk Rum

If you want a nice warm drink without alcohol, rum isn’t really required. I did a taste test before adding rum. It was really good but had a very heavy spice taste, as you might imagine. A squirt of whipped cream on top balanced it out perfectly.

Then I added spiced rum since it was the only kind I had on hand, and it was delish. I was concerned the spiced rum along with the spicy butter would be overwhelming, but it was quite nice and I will do it again. Also, I used less than 2 ounces just as my taste preference, but you do you. Whipped cream on top made it absolutely perfect.

The Ideal Coffee

When choosing your coffee, we suggest a strong brew. Strong coffee will provide more flavor than your typical drip coffee. We suggest using the Mocha Pot or a couple of shots of espresso. Texas Coffee Club has many great espresso blends and dark roasts that are perfect.

Milk Options

As for which milk to use, you definitely have options. Whole milk is going to provide a creamier consistency and a more satisfying mouth feel. However, whole make isn’t for everyone. If the thought of it makes you gag, by all means use whatever kind of milk you really like with your coffee.

To Froth or Not To Froth

You also have options on how to use the milk depending on your preference of a latte versus a cappuccino. Latte lovers prefer the milk to be steamed and mixed into the coffee. With this method, you can warm the milk, add it straight into the drink, and use a little hand-held frother to mix everything together. You get a nice, creamy coffee with everything perfectly blended together.

However, perhaps you prefer a cappucino with its distinct layers and a nice scoop of foam spooned on the top. Easy peasy. Simply froth the milk before adding it to the drink. Then when putting the cocktail together, layer the milk on top of the coffee and spoon the froth over the top. Either way you’re going to get a delicious drink!

Garnishes A Plenty

Once you have your coffee cocktail made, you can send it over the top with any number and combination of garnishes. You can never go wrong with a squirt of whipped cream! What about using a cinnamon stick as your coffee stirrer? A sprinkle of nutmeg, cinnamon, or allspice on top of the whipped cream is not only beautiful, it pleasingly tickles the sense of smell. A drizzle of caramel on top would be good, too. Is your mouth watering yet?

Now It’s Your Turn To Try!

A chilly night like tonight calls for a spicy treat. So what are you waiting for?
